Borrowed from the Boys – Tomboy Style Tips from LDN

The androgynous look has never been bigger in London right now, and at Sloanie HQ we’re positively drooling over the masculine tailoring and accessories we’re seeing on the streets and down the catwalks. Queen Cara D and sister Poppy do boyish tailoring with total finesse, and London it-girl and model Alice Dellal rocks the biker boy look to perfection complete with an edgy undercut and lots and lots of leather. Let us talk you through some our favorite boyish styling options right now…

Cara Delevingne steps out in a bold plaid trouser suit.

Trouser Suits

Cara Delevingne switched her trademark skinnies and hoodies for a plaid trouser suit when she stepped out for dinner to celebrate her 21st birthday recently (pictured above). Her blue and green check Anglomania suit jacket by Vivienne Westwood featured bold wide lapels, an asymmetric cut and a one-button fastening. Cara’s matching pants were wide-legged and high-waisted, finished with a black belt and crisp white shirt. Pure punk perfection.

Smoking Slippers

No longer a comfort option for retired golfers and dads, the smoking slipper is the newest addition to the prepster wardrobe, and the Sloanie girls are all over it! London model and socialite Alexa Chung loves to wear hers on flights between London and New York, and British singer Pixie Lott rocks the slipper flat as an edgy alternative to cutesy ballet pumps. We love these posh flats in velvet with gold embroidery, and so do Taylor Swift and Miranda Kerr. Our favourites are the Penelope Chilvers flats with palm tree embellishment. Pure St Tropez kitsch.

Tank Watches

Inspired by the masculine, boxy shapes of 1920’s Art Nouveau, the Cartier Tank watch is being replicated all over the place, having been made iconic by super-Sloanie Lady Diana and chic first ladies Michelle Obama and Jackie Onassis. A chunky tank watch looks super preppy peeping out under a chunky knit turtleneck sleeve, and totally sleek paired with a trench coat and boots.

Chinos and Loafers

Another cheeky steal from the frat-boys is the chinos-and-loafers combo – a look that’s pure Ralph Lauren. A classic pairing that’s reminiscent of yachting weekenders, balmy evenings out in Monaco and polo-playing in the Hamptons. Style with a crisp button-down Oxford shirt and Ray Bans for extra preppy points, plus a cashmere V-neck sweater for a winter look that’s pure college chic. A look that’s just as nautical as it is equestrian, why not accessorize with our anchor necklace or a stack of leather horsebit bracelets?

How to style loafers

“The tuxedo epitomizes glamour and androgynous cool,” says LA celeb stylist Rachel Zoe, and we couldn’t agree more.  Bianca Jagger married Rolling Stones frontman Mick in a sexy white tuxedo in 1971, and Madonna rocked a full tux and top hat at the premiere of her MDNA tour in Paris last summer. But you don’t have to be A-list to rock this powerful look. Style tuxedo trousers alone with heels and a feminine blouse, or add some statement jewellery and a clutch to your tux jacket and jeans look.
