Brrrr Baby it’s Cold Outside – 5 Coat Trends – Guest Post

Until just a couple of weeks ago, I owned two coats, a ski coat and a thin wool peacoat, because living in Texas, that’s all I needed for the two weeks of winter and our one ski trip a year. All of that has changed now that we’ve moved to chilly, wintry Michigan and I have discovered the need for many coats in a few different colors and styles:

The Puffer

This is what I’d call my everyday coat, at the moment. A longer-length puffer, preferably with a belted waist, is the perfect throw-on coat for errands or heading out for a casual dinner. I typically try to look for darker colors and then pair a puffer with a bright colored scarf to add a little pop without any additional volume.

Peacoat

The perfect preppy essential. A peacoat is perfect for work or occasions where you’re dressed up underneath your outerwear. From bright cobalt blue to basic black or tan, a peacoat is a great basic to pair with a printed scarf or hat.

Plaid

When it comes to patterns, I’m partial to plaid coats this season and there have been so many great ones out there at a variety of prices. You can look for a dressier plaid or a more hunter-chic buffalo check print, depending on your level of tolerance for the pattern.

Leather

Whether you’re more comfortable with a leather moto jacket or leather accents on another coat, it’s a trend you can’t (and shouldn’t) avoid this winter.

Vest

Fur, puffy, or otherwise, vests are great for layering. I throw a fur vest underneath a puffer or a peacoat to keep me warm in a chilly restaurant and I love a puffy vest for a casual look running errands.

Coats are a great investment and, with great accessories, never go out of style.  What styles are you shopping to keep warm this winter?
