As the weather starts to warm up both in the UK and the US, our footwear options can leave us in a bit of a tizz. It’s not quite hot enough yet for your surfy flip flops and gladiator sandals, but it’s getting far too mild out there for those heavy winter boots. And sometimes, life is just too darn busy for a pedicure. Fear not though, Sloanies, we’ve got your go-to spring and summer shoe sorted. Go bag yourself a pair (or three…) of espadrilles.
Chanel kickstarted this trend revival with their chic espadrille pumps which caught the attention of fashionistas and celebs the world over, and the High Street soon caught on. Along with Zara, J. Crew, Marc Jacobs, Longchamp and countless other designers and retailers.
Now we call this a ‘revival’ because espadrilles have been around forever. Almost literally. These canvas and rope creations actually date back to the 13th century when soldiers in south west France and Spain went to war in rope sandals tied to their ankles. And when the Spaniards came to South America, so did their innovative and practical footwear.
More recently, espadrilles migrated to fashion staple in the 1940s when sirens of the silver screen like Sophia Loren, Lauren Bacall and Grace Kelly sported the footwear both on and off-screen. Even JFK wore espadrilles, apparently – whilst vacationing in Cape Cod.
Wear them with turned-up boyfriend jeans and a light sweater for a relaxed lunch with friends in the spring time. This look is a bit nautical too, which we’re always a fan of. Step out in a stacked wedge espadrille with ribbon straps around the ankles à la Alexa Chung to instantly upgrade your casual about-town look to something more elegant. So pretty.
These gladiator-style espadrilles with an ankle fastening also look positively Riviera-chic with cropped jeans, a big floppy hat and Breton stripes. You can see Alexa’s a big fan of her espadrilles, and we’re totally obsessed with this look.
Style up a simple day at the beach outfit with a pair of playful flat espadrilles in a statement print like zebra or traditional Basque-style stripes, and you’re good to go. These shoes look super cute with legs-out denim shorts, beach dresses and miniskirts, and super chic with a maxi dress and oversize sunnies.
They’re practical, comfy and stylish. They’ll put a spring in your step like you’re on vacation, even if you’re stuck doing nine to five for the foreseeable future. Oh, and they’re a bit French, too. We think we have ourselves a Sloanie style staple right here. Shop our faves below.
How do you wear yours? You know the ‘drille’! Tag us (@SloaneRanger) in your selfies and we’ll regram and retweet our favorite espadrille ensembles.
