Four Essentials for Preppy Fall Style

Preppy FALL wardrobe ESSENTIALS 2014

We’ve researched this tirelessly, Sloanies. We’ve tried, tested and obsessed over this issue like the hardcore style devotees we truly are, and we’ve finally paired your fall style essentials down to the fab four. And fabulous they truly are: you’ll wish it was fall forever when you’ve got this wardrobe dialled…

1.  Faux Fur Vest

Add a whoosh of glam to your fall get-up with the simple and oh-so-cozy addition of a faux fur vest. Throw yours on over a pretty blouse, boots and slacks to take the edge off those blustery evenings out, or wear it under your wax jacket or tweed for an added layer of warmth on those bracing country walks. Kate Moss and Mille Mackintosh are rarely papped without theirs when the chilly weather comes to play in London town, Rihanna styles hers with plaid shirts, and Elle Macpherson wears her like a proper supermodel – with cashmere and leather. Why not rock yours with a felt fedora for a Rosie Huntington-Whiteley look that’s totally current and season-appropriate.

2.  Classic Riding Boots

This year, winter boots have gone uber-equestrian: tall, sleek and super-flattering. Pure Kate Middleton chic, in other words! Step out in yours with a quilted Barbour on for super preppy points, or pair your tall leather boots with skinny jeans and a chunky knit blanket cape for a flattering and super comfortable look that’s also very practical in the cold without scrimping on style. Taylor Swift’s a big fan of the riding boot right now, as are Jessica Alba, Rosie H-W and Kate Moss. We love two-tone riding boots like these from Cara London which use leather and nubuck, and we’re totally spoiled for choice thanks to The Frye Company’s sumptuous leather offerings this fall. Want. Them. All.

3.  All the Plaid

Plaid’s made a huge comeback this season, helped perhaps by the huge trend for textured prints and oversized ethnic blanket scarves à la Burberry. Whether you’re sitting pretty in a plaid flannel shirt, leggings and riding boots, or wrapping up in a giant plaid scarf with your faux fur, you’ll be nodding to the season’s biggest accessory craze if you’re rocking some plaid this fall. Wind yours loose and snood-like around your next for warmth and volume, or let it drape around the neck dramatically with your pea coat, blazer or biker jacket. For a catwalk-ready look, wear yours belted like Cressida Bonas did in her Burberry shoot for Vanity Fair in September.

4.  Cozy Blanket Cape

The snugglier, the better – it’s all about comfortable style this fall! We’re loving chunky fisherman knits and colourful fairisle sweaters as well as anything oversized and cashmere, naturally. The blanket cape looks divine with an on-trend bucket bag slung over the shoulder, and smartens up a treat with the addition of wet-look pants. Dress it down with boyfriend jeans or skinnies, and a comfy pair of ballerina flats or sneakers.
