Summer brings with it a whole set of accessory options, from sandals to sunglasses and – our latest distraction – bags. Whether we’re throwing a bunch of beach stuff together for a day’s surfing or heading out for an al fresco dinner date in the city, summer bags and clutches can be lighter weight, brighter and generally a little more daring than the colours, prints and textures we fall back on in the fall. Here are some of our favourites…
Small and shapely enough to grasp in one hand but roomy enough for all your essentials, K-Middy’s a big champion of the box clutch and this summer they’re absolutely everywhere. Choose from blingy sequined to shiny lacquered offerings, or our current style crush – this Coral Panama Box Clutch from Smythson of Bond Street.
As likely to be spotted in the French markets of Marseilles as on the beaches of Malibu, the bucket tote is a timeless accessory that’s as practical as it is pretty. Go for traditional straw, summery stripes or animal print – or check out our Classic Totes for all manner of bold bright prints such as anchors, lobsters and polka dots.
You may or may not already know that Cara Delevingne has recently collaborated on her own collection of Mulberry bags due to drop this September. It’s difficult to categorise this collection that encapsulates backpacks, shoulder bags and traditional handbags, but we know our favourite is the silk classic calf with its eccentric lion head gold rivets, pictured above in taupe. Versatile and utterly different, the collection totally encapsulates the spirit of its eccentric English muse. We want them all.
Easy to sling on and pack with your night-out or day-trip essentials, the crossbody bag comes into its own in the summer when it’s not going to be swamped in mountains of winter layers and woolly scarves. We do large, saddle and regular-sized canvas crossbody bags with adjustable straps and all manner of bold, eccentric prints. Choose one with a delicate chain for summer evenings, and look out for ones you can detach the strap from for an instant clutch transformation. We’re rather partial to this palm print crossbody bag from Kohl’s – and it’s on sale at the moment, so hurry!
… And that brings us nicely onto our final obsession this summer: big, bright, exotic prints. Glastonbury Festival later this week is set to be awash with kimonos and pajama pants all bearing some sort of sultry Hawaiian vibe, and there’s no better way to experiment with a bold exotic print than to try out it as an accessory. From multicolor parrots on your box clutch to palm trees on your straw bucket tote, you have license to go wild this summer.
