Sloanie Style Spotter: That Lampshading Look

Lamp Shading Trend

Followers of the Modern Prep Gazette will know we’re big fans here of genuinely ‘wearable’ fashion, so we’re delighted to bring you news on the lampshading trend that’s becoming a trans-seasonal sensation on both sides of the pond. And no, this isn’t an interior design craze and involves no Lady Gaga-esque styling of household items – though to be honest you’d be forgiven for thinking it might be…

So in theory, the lampshade style craze isn’t too many steps removed from the ‘cozy leggings and XXL sweater’ combo we’re known to rock on a girls’ night in, so needless to say we’re over the moon that lampshading is now officially a thing. It’s like Christmas has come early (or late…) for us, Sloanies – two of our favorite wardrobe staples united in a totally fashion-forward look, and a most flattering silhouette that works day-to-night. Hurrah!

Championed by the ubiquitous Jenner-Kardashian sisters stateside and by the likes of supermodel Kate Moss and Made in Chelsea’s Binky Felstead over in Blighty, the lampshading trend is all about wearing a loose, bell-shape on top, with a pair of tall boots. Up top, think chiffon tunics and grungy t-shirt dresses, cashmere ponchos and boyfriend shirts. Mini skirt or shorts optional. Offering a cheeky nod to the swinging ‘60s London look – mini shift dresses and towering go-go boots – this is a silhouette being spotted on the runways as well as the High Street right now.

We’re channeling our very own scaled-back lampshade look by day with a chunky, oversize poncho on top, paired with our fave riding boots and a pair of skinny jeans or chunky woollen tights. Another option: replace that cozy knitwear with an oversize shirt dress in denim or plaid, a la Kylie Jenner. And for a totally fierce evening look, reach for your faux fur like Her Royal Highness Kate Moss, and swap the riding boots for something higher – with a sliver of thigh on show, if you dare…

To sum up, this is a fantastically wearable look that’s super easy to buy into without having to make any serious investments. Whether you’re dashing out to the gym, picking up some groceries at the market, hitting town with the girls or simply hanging out at home, this is a versatile style with options for all. Get. Involved.

And needless to say, this look is trending alllllll over Instagram right now, so check out #lampshading for more inspo. Tag us in your lampshading selfies @SloaneRanger, and we’ll regram our faves!
