If you’re an avid social media follower of the sisters Delevingne, Georgia May Jagger, Kate Moss, Rita Ora, Alexa Chung and co, you’ll be familiar with this oh-so-photogenic face already as she features heavily in their holiday snaps, front row paparazzi shots, wedding and festival pics. Sloanies, it is our esteemed honor to introduce you formally to Lady Mary Charteris: artistocrat / model / singer / DJ / stylist / socialite.
So let’s start with a little background, first. Mary’s mother worked for Andy Warhol and her aunt is fashion muse Daphne Guinness. Her father? The 13th Earl of Wemyss and 9th Earl of March, which makes her a Lady by official title – though Mary shuns such stuffy formalities in her hip and trendy social circles. She went to famous Bedales School – known for its relaxed and artistic teaching methods – alongside Poppy and Cara Delevingne, and counts the girls among her nearest and dearest. Poppy is her preferred tent buddy at festivals, and Mary remembers Cara as a cheeky 8-year-old, admitting that she had totally overlooked her supermodel potential at the time. Having grown up surrounded by fashionistas, artists, musicians and aristocrats, it’s no wonder that the 28 year old lives such a colourful life, dividing her time between London, the Cotswolds, and LA. Her most recent Instagram pictures show peeks of Mary’s wild social life, partying with British actress Jamie Winstone at her 30th birthday bash and enjoying some of the hospitality at Soho Farmhouse for Mark Ronson’s recent 40th birthday party at the exclusive members-only residence.
Her 2012 wedding to Big Pink frontman Robbie Furze has gone down in fashion history, from her eyebrow-raising wedding dress to the star-studded guest list. Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) sung to the congregation as Mary and Robbie signed the marriage register, as guests including Keira Knightley, Jerry Hall and Sean Lennon looked on. Taking place at her father’s country estate, Stanway, Mary wore a revealing number designed by punk stylist Pam Hogg (who has also dressed Lada Gaga) and then changed into a chain mail dress, then later a lace jumpsuit for the after-party. You’ll come to realise that Mary’s a big fan of the catsuit.
