For those as-yet-uninitiated, let us introduce you to Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice Elizabeth Mary of York. Sixth in line to the throne and the first female in the queue (hurrah!), she’s the eldest daughter of the Queen’s son Prince Andrew, Duke of York. And he’s Prince Charles’ brother. So to clarify, she calls the Queen ‘granny’ and Wills and Harry are her first cousins. Beatrice introduced cousin Harry to her BFF Cressy, and was there for her pal to take her out on the town (see above) when the couple split earlier this year.
Royals of this order don’t technically have a surname, but tend to take the name of the place they ‘rule’ over for argument’s sake. So at school she was known as Beatrice York in the same way that Prince Harry is known as ‘Wales’ in the Army and Wills and Kate are known as ‘the Cambridges’. The other surname all royals adopt in some situations is Mountbatten-Windsor, though. Are you taking notes?
As Princess Beatrice has just celebrated her 26th birthday we thought it was about time we get properly acquainted with this particular Royal. She may have come onto your radar in 2011 when she wore an unfortunately pretzel-shaped hat (designed by Philip Treacy) to the wedding of the Millennium, attracting all sorts of negative press attention in the process.
But what did our girl Princess Bea do in response to all those column inches? She put the hat on eBay and raised over $130,000 for charity with its proceeds, splitting the money between UNICEF UK and Children in Crisis. Take that, haters!
Needless to say, the fashion media’s trained eye has been on this Princess ever since, but a metamorphosis has taken place. Gone are her and younger sister Eugenie’s ill-advised head garments and frumpy frocks of yesteryear…
… Yep, Princess Bea’s found her style mojo and it’s a playful mix of bold prints and floaty feminine shapes, and we’re big fans here at Sloanie HQ! But there’s so much more to know about Bea, so let us share a few pearls with you.
– Beatrice is dyslexic and is the proud patron of a dyslexia support charity
– This princess loves Harry Potter
– She went to school in Windsor, just moments from the castle her grandmother lives in
– Bea volunteered as a sales girl at famous London department store Selfridges on her gap year
– She is the first Royal to complete the London Marathon… as part of a human caterpillar!
– Her long-term beau, Dave Clark, is working on the Virgin Galactic space tourism project
– She has a full time job in the finance sector
So there you have it – another stylish young Royal to keep an eye on! Happy birthday, Princess Beatrice!
