School’s Out: Sloanie Summer Holiday Time

Summer Travel

Exams are over and boarding schools all over the UK are throwing open their doors for the summer, whilst school’s out forever for those heading off to university in the fall. It’s tradition for students to take a summer vacation with their friends between school and college, before parting ways and heading off to their new seats of learning: Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Durham, Bristol and Cambridge, to name a few. Here’s where the Sloanie set are destined for in the coming weeks.

Salcombe, Devon

Salcombe, Devon

Perhaps the preppiest UK destination outside of London, Salcombe is a picture-postcard pretty beach resort in Devonshire. Great for shopping, sailing and generally schmoozing, Salcombe has a big reputation for catering to well-heeled families. Sloanie teens drive down to Salcombe en masse at the end of term, because someone’s parents will have a holiday home here that’s big enough for the whole gang to crash there for a week. There’ll be relaxed barbecues on the beach and hilarious nights out clubbing in fancy dress, lazy mornings back at the cottage and the odd pub lunch, too. Perfect. The ideal de-stressing vacation after that high-pressure exam period. Other popular locations for post-exam prepsters are Newquay, Polzeath and Rock in Cornwall, Southwold in Suffolk, and Scotland.

Positano, ItalyEuropean Grand Tour

Artsy students go inter-railing in Europe after their exams finish, for their first real taste of freedom and a good dose of culture thrown in. Once flights are booked and train tickets are purchased, all that’s left is to pack the guidebooks in your backpack and go. History of Art students and Fine Art majors head for Florence and Venice, taking in the towns of Siena, Pisa and Verona on the way. Days are spent sketching and walking, instagramming and visiting galleries and cathedrals. Evenings are spent sharing enormous pizzas on glittering piazzas, practising Italian with the locals, and sharing dorms in hostels – but you’ll be used to that from boarding school. You’ll finish their Grand Tour on the Amalfi Coast for a few days of beaching, photography and reading, before jetting back home inspired and enriched – and ready for college.

Greece TravelGreece

Beautiful harbour towns like Kassiopi in Corfu are popular destinations for preppy school-leavers looking for pretty beaches, endless Greek salads and a chilled out week away with friends and a stack of books and magazines for company. Fancy something higher-octane? Livelier towns like Malia in Crete attract great gangs of school-leavers each summer, keen to blow off all that post-exam steam in one hedonistic week away from the parents. Other party destinations popular with the boarding school set: Ibiza, Cannes, Rio de Janeiro and Palm Beach.
