Influential Style Icon: Kate Middleton

Our roll call of icons wouldn’t be complete with a post on our modern-day style icon and Sloane Ranger figurehead, the Duchess of Cambridge. Like all icons who truly stand the test of time, Kate’s signature looks are all replicable – hurrah! Like our beloved Audrey, Jackie and Diana, there’s nothing complicated about the way she dresses, and like her predecessors she manages to mix just the right amount of edge with elegance. Here’s how Kate does it:

Recycle Outfits

Our girl isn’t above wearing the same outfit twice, despite having her own dressmakers and every designer under the sun competing for her attention. She wore a striking red Luisa Spagnoli skirt suit on her New Zealand tour last year, having been snapped wearing it some thee years previously to an entirely different occasion. She has also been spotted out and about numerous times in her trusty Zara blazer with its nautical brass buttons – we all know the one, and it’s not unlike the sort of thing Princess Diana wore casually some twenty years previously.

Splash the Color

From bright canary yellow to every hue of blue, Kate rocks the block color look again and again – a smart way to breathe individuality into a look that might otherwise be seen as playing it safe. Taking style tips from the Queen on this one, Kate often goes bold blocking as a means to stand out from the crowd, matching the outfit color with her handbag and headwear for more formal engagements.

Get Tailored

Paying a little money to get investment pieces tailored to fit your body shape is a smart way to achieve a made-to-measure look without the couture price tag. It’s also a great way to customise an off-the-peg garment into something one-off if you have the vision for something different. Kate got the peplum pockets of a powder blue Alexander McQueen coat dress altered for an event, and has also had hemlines lowered and hitched up a few inches where necessary.

Keep Heels Simple

The ultimate in versatile footwear, Kate rocks her LK Bennetts with utter brand loyalty. Her nude pair of patent pumps made no less than six appearances on her tour of Canada and the US in 2013 and her black suede heels were worn frequently at the Royal Tour of Australia and New Zealand last year. Though we suspect she may have more than one pair of each in stock…

What’s your favorite Kate look? Ours has got to be her nautical styling with Breton stripe tops, capri skinny jeans and stack wedges – finished off with that trusty Zara blazer. Just charming with our Anchor Tote, if you ask us…
