‘Tis The Season…

London Events in June

June is here and the Sloanie summer season is in full, glorious swing. The month of May saw the Chelsea Flower Show play host to several of our favorite Royals, and over June and July the Sloanie calendar is positively off the hook with sporting and social events left, right and centre. But before we talk you through our favorite occasions on the Sloanie circuit, let us appreciate this sweet snap of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie arriving at Chelsea having been presented with beautiful spring floral bouquets. Great hair, Beatrice!

And here’s William, Kate and Harry taking a stroll around the gardens. Isn’t she sensational in green?

Here are four of the best-known events to make up what has been known as ‘The Season’ since the seventeenth century, when London’s social elite would plan balls, charity galas and sporting events to take place in and around the capital during the summer months.

Polo in the Park 3-5 June

Polo in the Park

Sticking with the Chelsea theme, the exclusive Hurlingham Club in this well-heeled London borough hosts this annual polo festival. For three exhilarating days, professional polo teams from six nations compete whilst guests cheer, sip, shop and schmooze the day away.

Royal Ascot June 14 – 18 June

Royal Ascot

Big hats at the ready! England’s most famous horseracing event takes place at Ascot Racecourse, near Windsor, every June. The Queen almost always pays Ascot a visit, and her own horses sometimes win – much to everyone’s delight. Headwear is mandatory in the Royal Enclosure: top hats (and tails) for the gents and big and bold hats and fascinators for the ladies. Tally ho!

Wimbledon 25th June – 10th July

Another regular fixture on the Sloanie’s social calendar is Wimbledon. This tennis tournament is held over a fortnight in this leafy suburb of South East London, and you won’t find a London pub that’s not showing the tennis on its big screen when finals weekend rolls around.  Little pots of strawberries and cream are synonymous with Wimbledon, as far as the Brits are concerned.

Henley Royal Regatta 29th June – 3rd July

Welcome to Henley-on-Thames, Sloanies. Dress code: stripy school blazers and caps for the boys and hemlines strictly below the knee for the girls. Get to know a member of the elite Steward’s Enclosure for a much-coveted guest’s badge, and while away an afternoon in a deck chair, watching the world’s most impressive rowing teams go head-to-head on this famous stretch of the River Thames. Things get wild at Leander Club once the racing finishes for the day, so head there for the after party. A fabulously British day out.
