September is when autumn comes to the UK and turns everything golden. Sloanies fresh off the plane from their summer vacations tend to keep things local in this warm and pretty month, biding their time before the ski season begins. But staying on home turf needn’t mean staying at home – especially with so many boutique hotels and members-only clubs springing up in the English countryside. So if they’re not staying with friends in the country, this is where Sloanies spend their fall weekends…
The countrified big sister of London members-only club Soho House, this is a dreamy weekend retreat for any Sloanie gang. Alexa Chung, Poppy Delevingne, Princess Eugenie and Cressida Bonas have already been a dozen times (see Instagram for evidence), and DJ Mark Ronson took over the whole Cotswold estate for his 40th birthday recently. Soho Farmhouse has a boating lake, horse-drawn carriages, a spa, forty beautifully-appointed log cabins and horse-riding on offer as well as log fires, a restaurant and cosy sofas in the main house. This is a car-free zone, and guests pootle about on bicycles while room-service is delivered by an old-fashioned milk delivery float. Try a spot of surfboard yoga in the outdoor pool, book yourself onto a course at the on-site cookery school, or come back next summer when the campsite – fully furnished yurts, of course – is up and running.
Lime Wood Hotel
Another weekend destination setting social media on fire this summer is the palatial Lime Wood country house hotel in the New Forest, Hampshire. Made in Chelsea’s Mille Mackintosh is a big fan, as are assorted rock stars, models and the Delevingne sisters who have taken to Instagram recently to share their snaps of lazy weekends swinging in hammocks in the hotel’s picturesque grounds. Brit supermodel Sophie Dahl married jazz musician Jamie Cullum here in 2010, putting this beautiful, leafy hideaway on the map.
The Wild Rabbit
Found in the Gloucestershire village of Kingham and in the very heart of Sloane Ranger country, The Wild Rabbit is part of the Daylesford Organic empire. So this means only organic meat and veg on the menu, cashmere blankets on the beds, and all manner of glossy-maned, well-heeled guests keen to escape the city lights for a night or two. Unsurprisingly, it’s recently been dubbed ‘Britain’s poshest pub.’
As you might imagine, there’s a hefty waiting list to visit places like these, so get organised if you’re planning a trip to the UK and book well in advance. Soho Farmhouse is members-only, but you can look into membership options here. You can follow @LimeWoodHotel and @TheWildRabbitKingham on Instagram, but uber-exclusive Soho House operates a no-social-media policy. You can have a peek at what goes on here by searching the #SohoFarmhouse hashtag, though…
